Choosing a perfume is above all a question of personality and moments. Before looking at brands, the easiest way is to know which fragrance family you like. Here is our simple guide, with examples you can find at Afanaya.
1. Fruity floral: fresh and cheerful
Light, sparkling and easy to wear every day, fruity florals combine fruit (pear, peach, redcurrant) and flowers. Perfect for spring, summer and the office.
- Karl Lagerfeld Fleur de Pêcher – yuzu, nashi pear, peach blossom and jasmine tea.
- Angel Schlesser Essential – redcurrant and bergamot, rose, peony and violet, on sandalwood and musk.
2. Fresh floral: luminous and romantic
Flowers with a fresh, airy touch – the choice for a feminine, natural trail.
- Jean Paul Gaultier La Belle Rosea – aquatic notes, peony and vanilla.
3. Musky and powdery: soft and elegant
Musks give a “second skin” effect: soft, clean and sensual. Ideal if you like discreet, refined perfumes.
- Narciso Rodriguez Narciso Poudrée – white jasmine and Bulgarian rose around a musk heart, on cedar and vetiver.
- Narciso Rodriguez All of Me Intense – black iris, jasmine sambac, rose and tuberose on musk, vanilla and sandalwood.
4. Floral oriental: warm and enveloping
Flowers wrapped in amber, vanilla and spices. These perfumes have a real presence and are especially lovely in autumn and winter.
- Rochas Tocade – rose, vanilla, amber and toasted almond.
- Moschino Femme – carnation, gardenia and rose on amber, vanilla and sandalwood.
- Paco Rabanne Lady Million – raspberry and neroli, orange blossom and jasmine, honey and patchouli.
5. Gourmand: sweet and addictive
Vanilla, tonka, praline: gourmand perfumes evoke desserts and comfort. Arabian perfumes excel in this style.
- Lattafa Opulent Red – pear and blood orange, jasmine and tuberose, vanilla, amber and tonka.

Eau de Toilette, Eau de Parfum or Extrait?
The difference is the concentration of perfume oils. As a general rule:
- Eau de Toilette (EDT): lighter, ideal for daytime and warm weather.
- Eau de Parfum (EDP): more concentrated, it usually lasts longer – the most popular choice.
- Extrait de parfum: the most concentrated, rich and intense; a few sprays are enough.
How long a perfume lasts also depends on your skin and the notes: woods, amber and vanilla generally last longer than citrus.
Our tips for choosing well
- Test on the skin, not just on paper: a perfume changes after 15–30 minutes.
- Think about the season: fresh and floral in summer, warm and sweet in winter.
- Have two perfumes: a light one for daytime, a more intense one for evenings.
- Apply on the pulse points (neck, wrists) without rubbing.
